Pablo Mayor-Folklore Urbano features the original music and arrangements of
NYC composer/arranger/pianist Pablo Mayor. His music engages the listener with the seductive Colombian rhythms of his native country as they entwine with sophisticated jazz harmonies and form. The show of this 12-piece band captivates listeners of all ages and ethnicities with music that is at the same time danceable, festive, and intriguing. NYC-based Folklore Urbano features Colombian folkloric drums/ percussion (tambora, alegre, maracas, among others), vocals, and an exceptional jazz horn section comprised of soprano/alto saxophone, euphonium, baritone saxophone, trumpet, and flute, a jazz rhythm section (drumset, bass, and piano).
Folklore Urbano forges new territory by presenting the improvisatory elements of jazz while retaining the rhythm and flavor of a Colombian tradition that is mostly unknown today.
The group’s CD, Aviso, has been broadcast throughout South America, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Puerto Rico, Miami, and New York, and their latest CD, Baile/Dance was released in October 2005 with Chonta Records.
“…Folklore Urbano’s 12 members perform material that is authentic and refreshing, due in no small part to Mayor’s amazing way of synthesizing jazz with Colombian folkloric music, taking Latin music to an entirely new dimension” Vicky Sola, Latin Beat Magazine, Feb. 2006 issue.
“…Their latest CD Baile/Dance ranked among the top ten albums of 2005” World Music Central, December 2005.
“…Their first CD Aviso, featuring Andy Gonzales on bass, nominated as one of the top ten Latin music albums of 2003” Vicky Sola, Latin Beat Magazine. Dec. 2003/Jan. 2004 issue.
